TRC Parent Governor

Status: To attend local governing body meetings throughout the year
Salary: Voluntary position
Location: Thomas Rotherham College
Closing date: 25th November 2019, 9:00am

Dear parents/carers,

We currently have vacancies for up to three parent governors and are seeking expressions of interest from enthusiastic and committed parents/carers to join the Thomas Rotherham College Local Governing Body.

Thomas Rotherham College is part of Inspire Trust, a multi-academy trust that also includes Oakwood High School and Sitwell Junior School.

Inspire Trust Ethos

Within this multi-academy trust, we will work together to inspire learners to achieve for today, for tomorrow and into the future.

Inspire Trust Priorities

  • All children and young people will make at least good progress
  • There will be no underperforming cohorts
  • All teachers will deliver at least good learning
  • All schools or colleges will move to the next level of successful performance

We are looking for dynamic individuals from different backgrounds with skills and experience in the areas of education, special educational needs and disabilities, strategic leadership, legal and human resources. All governors need to have the capacity to interpret data, policy and principles and apply this using sound judgement, good communication and excellent team working skills to have an impact on continued development and ensure that our pupils and students receive the best possible education.

At Inspire Trust we always aim for positive and purposeful partnerships with parents, which undoubtedly bring important benefits to the pupils and students. One of the most significant ways you can help in promoting this aim is to volunteer to be a parent governor. The local governing body is a principal recommending body to the Board of Trustees, providing critical feedback on how the school or college is progressing, and providing support to ensure that all pupils and students within Inspire Trust receive a high-quality education.

Parent governors are welcomed as valued members of the team and play a vital role in ensuring the governing board, and therefore the trust board, are aware of the views of parents.

We are confident that there are parents prepared to volunteer to take on this key role and give their time and commitment to help us continue to develop and improve performance.

The term of office for parent governors at TRC is up to 2 years, linked to your child’s time at the college.

Governors currently meet as a local governing body three times a year and meetings usually start at 5.30pm and finish around 7.30pm. All meetings are held at the college. If needed, additional meetings will be planned with, unless there are extraordinary circumstances, seven days’ notice given.

Governors are occasionally required to make visits during the day and are encouraged to support events, where possible.

We offer new governors a comprehensive and supportive induction, and the opportunity to be assigned a mentor. Full training for the role is also available.

If you are interested in becoming a governor, please complete our Expression of Interest form at, which will need to be submitted to the Clerk to the Trust by 9.00am on Monday 25th November 2019.  A governor search panel will consider your expression of interest and contact you to discuss further or invite you to meet with them.  If the expressions of interest from parents exceed the number of parent governor vacancies, an election will be held.

When nominating yourself for the role of parent governor, you do so with the belief of having the skills and commitment to undertake the role and being trusted to represent the views of parents when working with other governors and the Principal, to promote high standards and strategically develop the college. The parent governor’s role is not to represent individual parents’ views or to report back directly to parents.

Should you have any questions about the role please do not hesitate to contact me via the Clerk to the Trust – contact details below.

Yours sincerely,

Cllr D Roche
